1. Will writing
A Will comprises your formal instructions, as to how (and to whom) your estate is to distributed, 'when the time comes'.

2. Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) Deeds
An LPA Deed is a legal document under which you appoint a person in whom you have sufficient faith and trust in, to look after your affairs should at some future date, you are unable to attend to these affairs yourself, as a result of a debilitating affliction such as Parkinson's Disease or Alzhiemer's Disease; dementia, stroke or an accident.

3. Advance Decisions (formerly known as 'Living Wills')
An Advance Decision enables you to make choices in respect of medical treatment; to record your wish to refuse certain types of medical treatment and to appoint somebody to make decisions, should you be unable to do so yourself.

4. Family Protection Trusts
If you own assets above (currently) £23,250 and need residential care in later life, you are expected to pay for ALL the care costs. This means that you may have to sell assets (such as your home) in certain circumstances. However, if you have already placed your assets into a Family Protection Trust, it is highly unlikely that they can be used towards these costs.
Placing assets into a Family Protection Trust also means that there is no probate procedure and hence no probate fees; for an estate bearing a value of £250,000, these probate fees could be £8,000.
Banks typically charge between 3% and 4.5% of the whole value of the estate.
